New Trash Cart Program Rollout Successfully Completed

(Guam, June 22, 2010) – The Guam Solid Waste Management Division (SWMD) announced today that the rollout of the new cart-based residential trash collection system has been successfully completed. The response from residential customers to the new trash cart system has been very positive since the rollout started in late November 2009.

"The new cart-based trash collection system is an important step towards keeping Guam clean and green,” said Receiver Representative David L. Manning. "Residents quickly got on board, and the initial supply of 7,000 carts was exhausted before a second shipment arrived. Demand for the new cart was so strong that a third shipment was required in order to complete the delivery of carts to new customers. Overall, we delivered carts to 19,090 customers, an increase of 6,501 representing a 52 percent in total residential customers.”

Residents who still want to register for trash service and receive a new covered, rolling trash cart, can do so by filling out the registration form (www.guamsolidwastereceiver.org/pdf/Registration Form.pdf; also available at the SWMD office) and bringing it to the SWMD at 542 North Marine Corps Drive, Tumon, Guam 96913. Residents can also contact SWMD customer service representatives at 646-3111 for more information on the process.

The new cart-based service is only the beginning. Later this year, a pilot curbside recycling program will be rolled out to approximately 1,000 homes and a bulky waste collection for furniture and appliances will begin. Future plans also include free household hazardous waste collection sites to dispose of batteries, anti-freeze, used motor oil and other household toxics that are hazardous and can’t be put in with the regular trash.
