Curbside Recycling Pilot Project to Continue While Results Are Evaluated

(Guam, November 23, 2011) – Federal Receiver Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc. (GBB) today clarified to residents of Guam that the Guam Solid Waste Authority (GSWA) is continuing the current curbside recycling pilot project while results are being evaluated. The program was officially announced in October 2010, with collection service implemented gradually for 1,000 households throughout the island between November 2010 and January 2011. The pilot project’s objective is to determine the feasibility of implementing curbside recycling collection services throughout Guam for all GSWA customers.

"We want to reassure all households currently participating in the pilot project, and all stakeholders interested in the results of the evaluation, that recyclables collection will continue,” said Receiver Representative David L. Manning. "The evaluation of the program will occur in 2012, and there will be a public discussion of the evaluation before any final decision is made. Until then, the pilot program will be ongoing.”

The GSWA will evaluate the success of the project by assessing the level of participation in recycling, the quantity and quality of the materials collected, and the cost of the program, less any revenue from the sale of the recyclables. The GSWA will also evaluate the costs and results of three collection schedules: weekly collection, every other week collection, and monthly collection.
