Guam Solid Waste Authority Constructing New Harmon Residential Transfer Station And Household Hazardous Waste Facility

(Guam, December 4, 2012) – Federal Receiver Gershman Brickner & Bratton, Inc. (GBB) today announced that construction work has begun on the new Harmon Street Residential Transfer Station located off of Harmon Drive and adjacent to the Government of Guam’s Department of Public Works. The new transfer station will provide the public with the following services:

"The new residential transfer station will replace the one that closed at the Ordot Dump when operations ended on August 31, 2011,” said David L. Manning, Receiver Representative.  "The other residential transfer stations at Dededo, Agat and Malojloj will also be upgraded to comply with the permitting requirements of the Guam Environmental Protection Agency. When construction of the new transfer station is completed along with the upgrades to the existing transfer stations, customers will have better and safer traffic flow patterns, and will find it easier to unload their materials. Furthermore, the new facility will provide for the safe disposal of household hazardous waste as required by the Consent Decree.”

The Federal Receiver awarded the construction work for the new Harmon Street Residential Transfer Station to Maeda Pacific Corporation after an evaluation of competitive bids from seven firms.  Maeda Pacific Construction is required to have the work completed no later than November 2013.

About GSWA
The GSWA is a public agency, created by Guam Public Law 31-20. The agency is a totally self-funded operation whose mission is to help its customers dispose of their trash in an environmentally safe and regulated manner. Each week, GSWA employees collect curbside trash from approximately 17,000 GSWA customers. GSWA also receives trash collected by commercial haulers and transported to the Hauler’s Transfer Station. In all, the GSWA handles more than 90,000 tons of material a year. GSWA diverts material away from the landfill through services such as the Bulky and Metallic Waste curbside collection, recycling facilities at the Residential Transfer Stations, and prohibition of certain recyclables from being disposed at the Layon Landfill.
