Federal Receiver Warns of Potential Internet Scam Related to the Guam Solid Waste Authority

(Guam, May 19, 2015) – Federal Receiver Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc., (GBB) said today that the Guam Solid Waste Authority (GSWA) has been the target of fraudulent attempts to transfer GSWA funds. These scams have been detected by the financial institutions serving GSWA.  Through strict adherence to Court-approved procedures, GSWA will not lose any funds as a result of these illegal activities.

There is no indication that this cyber-attack has targeted GSWA customers.  However, we urge all GSWA customers, vendors, and business partners to be extremely cautious with any electronic communications requesting financial transfers or personal account information of any kind.  Please be alert and report any suspicious online activity by contacting GSWA at 671-646-3111between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. (Mon-Fri) and to law enforcement through the information available at the U.S. Justice Department’s Computer Crime & Intellectual Property Section at: www.justice.gov/criminal/cybercrime/reporting.html.

The Federal Receiver and its banking partners in Guam have reported these incidents to the proper authorities and are working with law enforcement and banking officials to protect all GSWA funds.  Customers using PayPal as a means of payment for their bills are urged to continue to use that method but to report any unusual or suspicious activity to both GSWA and proper authorities. When paying, online customers are urged to make sure they begin the payment process on the official Guam Sold Waste Authority website at www.guamsolidwasteauthority.com.
